Transit times of baseflow in New Zealand rivers. Uwe Morgenstern.
The water as well as other natural resources keeps a lot of information, analyzing the composition of water can determine its quality and its constituent components.
In addition to sunlight, giving the planet light and heat from outer space to Earth cosmic rays fall. The sun illuminates only half the globe, and cosmic rays are carried to us from all sides. Earth "bathed" in cosmic rays, consisting mainly of high-energy protons, which are so vigorously penetrate the upper layers of the troposphere that shatters comes their way air nitrogen, oxygen and carbon. At the same time in different directions scatter shards of protons, neutrons, and mesons, which form secondary cosmic radiation. These secondary protons and neutrons fly more slowly and meet again with air atoms, split them all into two parts, one of which may be a newt - tritium nucleus.
Newborn tritium nucleus is not long retain their individuality, very soon they will oxidize and turn water and then with a conventional pouring rain to the earth. There tritium begins his earthly life and at the same time the water by participating in the global water cycle. But unlike their relatives - protium and deuterium, and the water - not a closed tritium cycle. The reason for the radioactivity of tritium half-life of a little more than 12 years. [1]
In the presentation, Mr. Morgenstern analyzed New Zealand water and estimated the approximately age of the rivers, lakes etc. Also, in his opinion by analyzing the water by tritium we can get information about groundwater and contaminants in the water.
In general, I was really impressed with this topic, calculating the age of the water with tritium was new for me. In my point of view, this analysis are very useful in geology and hydrology.
Geospatial Approach for Mitigating Natural (Flood) Hazards in the Himalayas. Dr. Shahnawaz.
Presentations of Dr. Shahnawaz are always interesting, there are analysis and researches in different fields related to GIS. By analyzing data from satellites, people can predict some natural disasters. TERRA-MODIS images and Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission that provides daily data for whole planet, can help to predict the flooding. In this presentation, were using the slopes of Central Himalayas and TM images, TRMM to construct a model of water flooding and prevent the disaster to save the lives of residence.
In conclusion, there are a lot of organizations that have access to daily data from satellites, also if they will do such analysis that Dr. Shahnawaz advised, there can be saved a lot of lives of people and prevent the disasters in some levels.
GPS trajectories and automobile energy use. Peter RANACHER.
Nowadays, GPS is one of the most popular thing in the gadgets, which works offline and no weather impact. Using the cars or other vehicles in large quantities can pollute the air or damage the roads. By using it less or right, we can save time, atmosphere etc., this can be achieved using the GPS, OSM and LiDAR data. I like the idea of Mr. Ranacher – the energy efficiency of car traffic in urban road networks. In addition, such energy efficiencies can be provided not only in urban roads, also in whole road systems.
Numerical Weather Prediction. Liviu OANA.
In recent years the accuracy of forecasting weather is in high level, even the wind speed or the degrees can be predicted by exact time. There are a lot of observation system that provide data for forecasting the weather. However, the accuracy of numerical weather prediction cannot be exactly it depends on a lot of reasons related to weather condition. And if forecasting will not be right there might be consequences of butterfly effect.
Climate change and vulnerability to vector-borne diseases. Michael Hagenlocher.
Man and his life is the most supreme value on Earth. Moreover, there are a lot of external impacts that affect to people’s life. One of them is illnesses like malaria, dengue fever etc. Climate, poverty, densely location of slums and other factors can be reason of such diseases. GIS provide analysis that can help determine the risks of such diseases. Using remote sensing and other GIS methods, it is possible to predict and prevent malaria or dengue fever.
Mr. Hagenlocher created concepts and modeled latent phenomenon. It is great job and it can be very useful.
Geo-Web Platforms, PPGIS, Spatial Planning (Latin America): The GeoCitizen Approach. Karl Atzmanstorfer.
As I mentioned in previous reviews, GIS provide huge amount of type spatial analysis that can help to solve a lot of problems that related to environment and etc. In this presentation, people helps to people. GIS researchers have helped people from Latin America, they taught them how to work with GIS tools, how to make a map, etc., because this places were not mapped in large scales even there were no cadastral inventorization. GIS analysis can helps to people, on other hand they can destroy the place, it depends on whose hand this analysis appear.
The GeoCiudadano application is interesting. This app reminds me TripAdvisor app, where you can also, commenting and communicating, and maybe some improvements from hotel or restaurant etc. sides. But this app relates to whole spatial things.
Findings in Communicating (Spatio-Temporal) Web Maps. Caroline Atzl.
iSPACE is a research studio of RSA is an Austrian nonprofit research institution, which provides GIS products (apps, tools, analysis, researches). The basic thing in providing any king of data is visualization. Furthermore, there is a concepts and programming details to show it nice. In this lecture, were presented detail information to user interface of spatio-temporal web maps and modelling the content, demo of web map. So, I got really helpful information to my studies and impressed how it was presented.
Application for retail service area assessment. B. Castellazzi.
For city planning is necessary to create the right plan for the city to further its development. It should divided by areas, estimated distance between building, infrastructures etc. If there is planning to build new retail service areas the special application will benefit. How the app works: network data, the basic thing; creating network topology, in example calculate the slope; Djikstra‘s Algorithm, finding best root and constructing the service area. With this app people without GIS knowledge can estimate where they can built the new retail area or supermarket.
Forest succession mapping with Airborne LiDAR. Natalia Kolecka.
LiDAR is a remote sensing technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser and analyzing the reflected light. [2] Nowadays, data, which taken from LiDAR uses in a lot of GIS researches. There are three types of LiDAR, they are airborne laser scanning, terrestrial laser scanning and spaceborne laser scanning. LiDAR data used to analyze the vegetation, plots, water and other spatial bodies. Determining vegetation on LiDAR data can be done by object-based image analysis. As I understood, the main idea in this work to identify vegetation by classes and use data in real world to improve landscape by agricultural areas, forests, urban areas.
Integration and interpolation of point-cloud data (sonar) for semi-automated extraction of 3D underwater elevation models. B. Vockner.
Underwater world is always interested mankind. By using GIS technologies, there can be made 3d underwater elevation model. The process of creating the app starts from collecting data from SONAR. The raw data converted to necessary formats by Python and PostGIS, then by using Interpolation methods and Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) it get 3d model of underwater surface. Other information to visualization can be added by divers.
It seems to me, it was useful to know how to do this online application and it showed other possibilities of GIS technology.
